Why should you seek treatment from a certified hand therapist(CHT) ?

A CHT is an Occupational Therapist or physical therapist by profession with:

  • at least three years of experience, and

  • 4,000 hours of hand and upper extremity therapy practice (upper extremity rehabilitation).

A CHT must have passed a certification examination that demonstrates knowledge of all areas of hand and upper extremity therapy before being granted the right to use the CHT designation. Hand therapists must renew their credential every five years through continued education and participation in hand and upper extremity therapy to continue using the CHT designation.

Do I need a physician’s (or physician assistant’s) order to see a CHT?

Physician (or their assistant’s) orders are preferable for a number of reasons:

  • Hand therapy is a speciality of Occupational Therapy and physical therapy and as such, is best performed with close and consistent collaboration between the CHT and physician

  • Referral’s from physicians help us obtain insurance preauthorization

A physician referral is the optimal way to ensure the highest degree of success for our clients.

You can call your doctor and ask for an order “OT Eval and Treat” or download the referral form uploaded above under Referral form for Therapy and get it filled by your doctor and your doctors office can fax it directly to 980-247-4004.
